UNHCR and IOM appeal to European leaders to tackle Mediterranean deaths

Ahead of this week’s meeting of European Union (EU) Heads of State and Government, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and IOM, the UN Migration Agency, are together appealing to European leaders to urgently take steps to address this year’s record rate of drownings on the Mediterranean Sea.

UN chief ‘appalled’ by killing of aid worker; calls for release of remaining hostages

The United Nations Secretary-General strongly condemned on Tuesday the killing of an aid worker from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in north-east Nigeria. He said he was “appalled” by her death on Monday.  

Climate change and multilateralism figure high on first day of UN General Assembly debate

If there was one issue that was a recurrent theme on Tuesday on the first day of the United Nations General Assembly’s annual general debate, it was the potentially catastrophic impact of climate change , from Secretary-General António Guterres’s opening address warning global Heads of State and Government  that “its speed has provoked a sonic boom SOS across the world”, to individual leaders highlighting their individual vulnerabilities.

Liberia: At UN, President Should Back Justice

 Liberian President George Weah should show leadership at the United Nations General Assembly by announcing his government’s endorsement of justice and reparations for victims of grave crimes during the country’s civil wars, 80 nongovernmental organizations said in a letter to the president released on Thursday.
