The recruitment of political party body guards as Marshalls to protect political parties has been banned following a consultative meeting between security stakeholders and representatives of political parties in the country
“How can we have the police as the national law enforcement body and have another body seemingly to serve the same purpose,” were the words of Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Dr. Ambrose Michael Sovula during the meeting.
While addressing political parties representatives on the 3rd of March, 2021, the IGP stressed that, the use of marshals in any form is not only illegal but affects the ability of the police to perform, adding that though marshals have been peaceful, yet there is a tendency for issues to happen.
“Our role as legal security apparatus should be proactive to forestall and pending situation that could undermine peace and security in the country,” he said.
A security sector press release highlights the growing trend among political parties training party loyalists as marshals.
