More than 5,000 people were rescued on Friday and Saturday in different rescue operations, according to Italian Coast Guard.
BBC report says more than 2,000 people were rescued on Friday and 3,000 on Saturday, adding that at least seven people drowned as aid workers struggled to rescue more than 1,500 migrants in one operation.
An eight-year-old boy was among the dead, rescue workers said.
IOM reports that 31,993 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 9 April, with over 80 percent arriving in Italy and the rest in Spain and Greece. This compares with 172,774 through the first 97 days of 2016.
