Sierra Leone — National drive in boosting the agricultural sector through various interventions is yielding better prospect for farmers and the country with the cocoa industry getting international interest.
The Sierra Leone Produce Marketing Company (SLPMC) is shipping 50 metric tons of cocoa to MINKA SCS in Switzerland after an agreement with MINKA SCS to supply the company cocoa grown in Sierra Leone.
Director of Operations for SLPMC, Hamid Kabba, said 2016 is a buying year and very promising for cocoa farmers in the country.
Mr. Kabba said SLPMC is targeting 1,000 metric tons of cocoa for export and that they will be working with the farmers to reach that target as there are many buyers willing to buy Sierra Leone agricultural produce.
“We want to have a share of the market,” he said.
He also disclosed that SLPMC wants to buy over 3,000 bags of rice for processing and domestic consumption and that the rice will be bought in 3 districts, Bombali, Kambia and Port Loko.
