Sierra Leone: President Ernest Bai Koroma on Monday 28th December, 2015 appointed Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) as Attorney General and Minister of Justice subject to parliamentary approval. JFK was until his appointment, Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) where he was serving the first year of his second five year term.
To many observers, JFK’s appointment did not come as a surprise, being one of the finest lawyers in the country who also once served as acting chief prosecutor for the United Nations-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone.
For those of who have been following his work at the ACC, JFK recorded tremendous success at the Commission by heightening the fight against corruption in the country.
During his tenure at the ACC, the Commission was able to mainstream anti-corruption measures in ministries, departments and agencies of government more than any time before, through its strategy of systems review.
This has seen a corresponding increase in revenue generating institutions and improved and better service delivery in such government entities. On the prosecution side, the Commission was also able to secure convictions in most of the cases prosecuted; a situation that also led to the recovery of billion of Leones of stolen funds in the past years.
The effective implementation of the anti-corruption strategies under JFK’s leadership also saw heightened public education campaigns on issues of transparency and accountability as well as the country’s consistent upward trend in transparency indices.
JFK’s achievements in his professional career so far have been due to his quality of leadership, thirst for result, interpersonal relationship with staff and a host of other qualities. Those who have worked with him always praise his commitment towards work (which sees him at work before 7 in the morning daily), sense of humour, empathy and loyalty. At this time of news of his appointment, we can only say that President Koroma has enlisted into his cabinet another dedicated public servant who will serve him and this country to the best of his ability.
